Get Inspired: Wise Words from Wise Women
I’m a proud owner of a thriving business, but that doesn’t mean I’ve achieved success. To me, success isn’t an ending point but an ongoing journey, and I’m constantly trying to learn from my contemporaries and inspire the next generation of women to find their own magic.
Along the way, I’ve used the words of other ambitious, driven and inspiring women as a sort of touchstone; these are the words I come back to when I need comfort, encouragement or a reminder that my work here is never done.
I hope you find meaning in them too.
“Don’t be intimidated by what you don’t know. That can be your greatest strength and ensure that you do things differently from everyone else.” – Sara Blakely, Founder of Spanx
Following the pack just ensures you’ll end up trailing the crowd. Forge your own path; it may be harder at first, but the journey will be so much more rewarding and the discoveries infinitely more authentic.
“If I stop to kick every barking dog, I am not going to get where I’m going.”– Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Olympic Track and Field Athlete
Success comes with a lot of noise, and not all of it is pleasant to listen to. Ignore the naysayers. They’re not worth your time or your energy.
“When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.”– Malala Yousafzai, Activist and Noble Peace Prize Winner
No matter how comfortable we get in our day-to-day existence or how frightened we are by the thought of voicing an unpopular or even potentially dangerous opinion, it must be done. We can affect change. Just try it and see.
“I didn’t get there by wishing for it or hoping for it, but by working for it.” – Estée Lauder, Businesswoman and Cosmetic Pioneer
Everybody can talk, but few people actually take action. If I had a dime for every person who told me, “I’ve always wanted to cook” or “I keep thinking about opening my own business,” every one of my pans would be filled to the brim with coins. No one is going to hand you your dream. You’re going to have to grab it for yourself.
“If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then you are an excellent leader.” – Dolly Parton, Actress and Singer-Songwriter
Surprise! It’s not just about you. Measuring your success by the size of your bank account or the number of rooms in your home is empty and sad. Measure your success by the success of others and you have a yardstick worth its weight in gold.
